Correspondence, journals, ledgers, diaries, account books, patent papers, legal briefs and related papers, law library catalog, and photographs pertaining to Jenckes' career from his days as a student at Brown University until his death. Documents his patent law practice; services to Rhode Island as legislator, adjutant general, and secretary to the 1842 Constitutional Convention and to the governor's council; and particularly four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, during which Jenckes was a pioneer in the civil service reform movement and a leader in the revision of the bankruptcy, patent, and copyright laws. Includes material on the Credit Mobilier of America fraud prosecution, patent cases such as the Corliss steam engine and Goodyear rubber controversies, and suits concerning ventilating and refrigerating patents.
